The coming Persecution is here November 4, 2011

If you read the Bible on a regular basis; or go to Mass on a regular basis (which I hope you do), the following should sound familiar.  It is from the Gospel according to St. Matthew – Chapter 5 – the Sermon on the Mount – the Beatitudes.  This comes at the end:
“Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”
Well folks, the days of Persecution are here; and they’ve returned with a vengeance.
All you have to do is look around you; and pay attention to the media.  Christians and Jews (particularly Catholics) are reviled, ridiculed and mocked with gleeful abandon.  We are scorned, litigated against, and have violence done against us, because of Jesus and our faith in Him.
Examples:
Catholic University in Washington D.C is being sued over Muslim student’s rights.  Yep, that’s correct.  A law professor has filed a human rights complaint against Catholic University in Washngton D.C because the rooms they meet in for prayer have too many Catholic symbols in them and these students “feel uncomfortable”.  Can you imagine?  A Catholic school is being sued because it has crucifixes and statues of the saints in it’s room.  I kid you not, I am not making this up!

This one is not particularly Catholic in nature – but is just as important as it is against a brother Christian.  Tim Tebow, a quarterback for the Denver Broncos is a very devout Evangelical Christian.  When he had a good game a few weeks ago, after a good play, he would fall down to one knee and give thanks.  Obviously, that’s not allowed in our Great Society.  It makes too many people feel uncomfortable.  So the following week, when playing against the Detroit Lions, whenever he was sacked, the Detroit players who were responsible for the sack, mimiced his gesture in turn.

There’s other examples too.  With Obamacare coming close to being enacted, Catholics and Catholic institutions are being forced into situations where they will have to quit their jobs of stop offering services altogether, rather than be forced into partaking in providing abortions or other healthcare practices deemed sinful by our Faith.
This kind of thing was unthinkable just 20 – 30 years ago!  When I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, the Catholic Church and other denominations were respected and were held in high regard. No one had a problem with mentioning God in the public square – reverence was admired.  Just goes to show you how far we have fallen.
